Hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and organized by the Seoul Design Foundation(CEO Choi Kyung Ran), “Seoul Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2020” kicked off with the “Hyeonghyeong-saeksaek” retrospective exhibition of designer Sul Yun Hyoung.
The archive exhibition of Sul Yun Hyoung, honorary designer of Seoul Fashion Week 2019, was held at 7:00 pm October 14 on the second floor of Design Pathway, Dongdaemun Design Plaza along with the fascinating eve ceremony of Seoul Fashion Week S/S 2020. The eve party, which began with a welcome speech by Choi Kyung Ran, CEO of Seoul Design Foundation, heated up with the presence of domestic and international fashion experts and fashion buffs.
Seoul Fashion Week’s new Executive Director Mikyung Jeon said at the opening ceremony, ”I feel so excited and honored to meet you as new executive director of Seoul Fashion Week. I’m so happy to open Seoul Fashion Week with the fabulous works of designer Sul Yun Hyoung, whose originality and creativity are increasingly gaining significance in this age of fast-paced consumerism.“
Designer Sul Yun Hyoung also thanked all those present as saying, “Working on the “Hyeonghyeong-saeksaek” archive exhibition has been a very special experience for me because I could look back on my past as a designer. I owe this honorable event to all of you who have always supported me. I hope this will give you a precious moment to reflect on what you miss most about your past.”
Right after, the exhibition began. All the visitors hailed the exhibition, officials say, because it gave them a rare chance to see the captivating fashion archive of designer Sul Yun Hyoung.
The “Hyeonghyeong-saeksaek” exhibition, which will run from October 15 to November 7 on the second and third floors of Design Pathway, DDP, will offer a colorful and fairytale fantasy of her archive clothes, highlighting the 45-year-long work history of designer Sul Yun Hyoung.
The “Hyeonghyeong-saeksaek” exhibition has a total of six themes – ‘Dream’, ‘Embroider’, ‘Connect’, ‘Weave’, ‘Draw’ and ‘Enjoy’. The theme of ‘Dream’ is based upon a pillow-end motif, while the ‘Embroider’ theme includes peony blossom–embroidered dresses. ‘Connect’ is all about patchwork quilts that brilliantly turn into beachwear and bustiers, while ‘Weave’ creates a compelling harmony between East and West, and past and present. ‘Draw’ is full of folk-art-motif dresses that resonate with time-transcending artistic values. And ‘Enjoy’ superbly sports elegant dress-skirts inspired by ‘Ilwolobongdo(日月五峰圖; a highly stylized landscape painting set behind Eojwa, or king’s throne) in the Joseon Dynasty’.
Meanwhile, designer Sul Yun Hyoung is acclaimed as the creator of a monumental fashion archive known as “Koreanism.” Her archive contains over 100 patterns, all of which are embroidered, woven, patched, connected and drawn with unusual sophistication and pinpoint precision. Her “hyeonghyeong-saeksaek (literally meaning ‘All Shapes and Colors’) Koreanism” is often dubbed as lyrical ornamentalism. Ornate but serene, and flashy but tranquil, her clothing items gorgeously straddles the boundary between European dresses, bustiers and beachwear and some of the best Korean hanbok themes.
Seoul Fashion Week S/S 2020, which began with the “Hyeonghyeong-saeksaek” archive exhibition of designer Sul Yun Hyoung, will run from October 15(Tue0 to 19(Sat) at Dongdaemun Design Plaza(DDP).
