2018 F/W HERA Seoul Fashion Week ‘Fashion Seminar’,

richer and more varied than ever


- Approximately 300 people participated during the two-day seminar.

- Interesting themes related to ‘dessert’, ‘fashion’ and ‘trend’.

- In-depth discussion among global fashion mentors about ‘New Luxury’ and ‘Sustainability in Fashion’.

 

Seoul Design Foundation (Acting CEO Seo Jeong hyeop) hosted ‘Fashion Seminar’ for two days on 21st(Tue.) and 22nd(Thu.) in Academy Hall on the 3rd floor of Design Lab of Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP).

 

‘Häagen-Dazs X HERA Seoul Fashion Week’ seminar, a collaborative seminar, was added to the 'Global Fashion Mentoring Seminar' program, which was held until last season. It made the contents about ‘fashion’ and ‘trend’ richer and more varied. During the two-day seminar, Häagen-Dazs’ catering and ice-cream sampling was offered, which delighted the audience.

 

First, the seminar 'Häagen-Dazs X HERA Seoul Fashion Week' was held for an hour and a half from 1:30 pm on 21st(Wed.). Under the subject ‘Häagen-Dazs, tastes fashion’, designer Mooyeol Lee, photographer Hyun Bum Nam, and patisserie Min Joo Yoo each gave lectures on ‘HAAGEN-DAZSXYOUSER’, ‘Artisan Spirit of 2030’s’ and ‘Aesthetics of dessert and fashion’.

 

Designer Mooyeol Lee started his lecture saying, “Häagen-Dazs has always been pursuing something new instead of stability. I have been impressed about that.” He also mentioned about his work collaborated with Häagen-Dazs, that YOUSER have always been masculine, however, he wanted to make different designs for the Seoul Collection. “These designs would be the ‘girlfriend’ designs of YOUSER.”

 

Street photographer Hyun Bum Nam talked about artisan spirit, he explained, “I focus more on discovering and photographing interesting objects through observation than emphasizing technical parts. It appears to be expressed in the photograph, only if you are being focused and serious about the object.” On the other hand, the last lecturer Min Joo Yoo started her speech by asking a question about the relation between a fashion brand and a dessert café. She said, “Eating desserts is like wearing nice clothes. The reason why everyone loves desserts and beautiful clothes, is because they want to enrich their lives.”

 

On the next day, ‘Global Fashion Mentoring Seminar’, which was hosted by Fashion Creative Director Seo Eun Young, was held from 1pm on 22nd(Thu.).In the seminar, 7 mentors participated, including Sara Maino (Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia), Anders Christian Madsen (Fashion Critic of Vogue UK),Isabella Burley (Editor-in-Chief of Dazed UK), Leah Kim (VP/DMM of Women’s Designer of Barneys New York) and Rune Park (Fashion Director). They talked deeply about “New Luxury" and "Sustainability in Fashion", which are hot issues in the fashion industry lately.

 

Rune Park and Mario Dell’ Oglio (Italian chamber of buyers President) both agreed upon the idea that Millennials (1980s as starting birth years and early 2000s as ending birth years) are main customers of the ‘new luxury’ consumption. Lisa Aiken (Fashion Director of NET-A-PORTER) emphasized, “It is important to consider the consumption characteristics of Millennials.” Besides, Leah Kim mentioned, “Although the online market is expanding, buying experiences in offline stores are still practical. For the growth of ‘new luxury’ brands, it is important to have more buying experiences.

 

About ‘new luxury’, Isabella Burley said, “It will be a new challenge and opportunity for both established and rising designers.” Anders Christian Madsen put stress on the role of rising designers, said, “In order to make one’s own ‘new luxury’ brand, variety and scarcity must be considered.”

 

Sara Maino, who made a speech on ‘Sustainability in Fashion’, said, “‘Sustainability in Fashion’ is difficult, and it needs long-term goals. I think it is necessary to learn systematically from school education as it is a topic to be approached from a long-term perspective. Rising designers have to be aware that they should always keep this in mind.”

 

Meanwhile, 2018 F/W HERA Seoul Fashion Week will be held until 24th(Sat.) at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). Fashion shows presented by domestic top designer brands, off-shows held throughout Seoul, fashion trade show, cultural events for citizens and experience zones of sponsoring companies are making the festival more varied.
